IDIOM
An Idiom is a phrase or expressioin whose meaning is different from the literal meaning of the individual words. Idioms are commonly used in everyday language and oftern have a cultural or metaphorical significance. जो अर्थ मुहावरे का हिंदी में होता है ठीक वही अर्थ Idiom का अंग्रेजी में होता है । अर्थात ऐसे शब्द, वाक्य या वाक्यांश जिसका प्रयोग भाषा को प्रभावशाली और आकर्षक बनाने के लिए प्रयोग होता है उसे मुहावरा कहते है । इनका सामान्य अर्थ न लेकर विशेष अर्थ लिया जाता है ।
In Short, We can say- Idioms are phrases with figurative meanings that cannot be understood just by looking at the individual words.
Here are some important English Idioms along with their meanings(Asked in competitive Exams) । अंग्रेजी के प्रमुख मुहावरे जो परीक्षा में अक्सर पूछे जाते है -
A blessing in disguise - Something good that isn’t recognised at first. छुपा रुस्तम
Break the ice - To initiate conversation in a social setting. बात छेड़ना
Hit the nail on the head - To do or say something exactly right. सच बोलना
Bite the bullet- To endure something painful or unpleasant. कष्ट उठाना
Piece of cake- Something that is very easy to do. बाएं हाथ का खेल
Let the cat out of the bag- To reveal a secret. भेद खोलना
Once in a blue moon- Something that happens very rarely. ईद का चाँद
Kill two birds with one stones- To accomplish two things at once. एक तीर से दो निशाने
When pigs fly- Something that will never happen. न नौ मन तेल होगा न राधा नाचेगी
Under the weather- Feeling sick or unwell. अस्वस्थ होना
You cannot judge a book by its cover- Don’t judge something or someone by appearances alone. कवर देख कर बुक जज नहीं करना चाहिए
Pull someone’s leg- To tease or joke with someone. टांग खींचना
Steal someone’s thunder- To take credit for someone else Achievements or ideas. किसी दूसरे की मेहनत का क्रेडिट ख़ुद लेना
On the ball- To be alert and quick to respond or act efficiently. चौकन्ना
Let sleeping dogs lie- To avoid interfering in a situation that could cause trouble. मुसीबत से बचकर निकलना
In the heat of the moment- Saying or doing something without thinking due to being emotional or excited. उत्तेजना में कुछ कह या कर देना
Hit the sack- To go to bed and sleep. सो जाना
Every cloud has a silver lining- There is something good in every bad situation. सबमें कुछ न कुछ अच्छा होता है
Cut corners- To do something the easiest or cheapest way, often compromising quality.
Burn the candle at both ends- To overwork yourself by doing too many things.
Bite off- more than you can chew.
Add fuel to the fire - To make a bad situation आग में घी डालना
Back to the drawing board- To start obey after a failure.
The ball is in your court- It’s up to you to take the next step or make the decision. दूसरे के पाले में गेंद डालना
Beat about the bush- To avoid talking about the main point.
Cry over spilled milk- To complain about something that cannot be changed. बेकार का रोना
Off the Hook- To be free from blame or responsibility.
Miss the boat - To miss an opportunity. अवसर चूकना
Jump on the bandwagon- To join others in doing something that is currently popular or successful.
Hit the road- To Leave or begin a journey.
Through thick and thin- To be loyal no matter what the circumstances are.
Take with a grain of salt- To not take something too seriously.
Put the cart before the horse- To do things in wrong order. उल्टी गंगा बहाना
अंत भला तो सब भला - All's Well that ends well
अंधों में काना राजा- A figure among ciphers.
एक पंथ दो काज - To kill two birds with one stone
जैसा बाप, वैसा बेटा- Like father, like son hers.
ऊंची दुकान फीका पकवान - Great boast, little roast
ऊंट के मुँह में जीरा - A drop in the ocean
आधी छोड़ पूरी को धावे, आधी मिले न पूरी पावे - He who grasps all things will lose all.
एक मछली सारे तालाब को गंदा कर देती है - A black sheep infects the whole flock.
एक ही थाली के चट्टे बट्टे - Cast in the same mould.
एक हाथ से ताली नहीं बजती - It takes two to make a quarrel.
